Hanuman Chalisa

Verse 1

The Hanuman Chalisa is a set of instructions hiding inside a prayer.

Hanuman crossed an ocean. These are the instructions for crossing yours.

Shri guru charan saroj raj, nij manu mukuru sudhari.

With the dust of my guru's feet, I polish the mirror of my own mind.

Forty verses of praise are coming. But he won't start until the mirror is clean. Because if your mind is dirty, everything you look at gets distorted, including God.

So how do you clean your mind?

You can't do it yourself. The mind cannot fix the mind. That's why deciding to "be better" has never once worked.

So watch what the author actually does. He doesn't ask for advice. He bows down to the Guru, the quiet witness within him.

Not for the words. For the dust.

Because information doesn't clean your mind. Action cleans your mind.

Nobody bows down when everything is going great. You bow down when you're tired of running around. The anxiety you hate wasn't a mistake. It was the very thing that brought you to your knees.

You don't get your life together first and then bow. You bow first, and that's how you get clean.

And once the mirror is clean, you realize something:

God (Ram) was never missing. Cleaning your mind doesn't add anything new. It just removes the dirt so you can see the divinity that was already inside you.

You're not trying to become someone new. You're trying to uncover who you've always been.

And all of this is still line one.
